It’s been a wild two weeks of fiber and fabric, and I’ve continued to craft through it all!

Moving Right Along

I’m currently working on four garments, one home decor project, and a project that just needs to be seamed! In order of excitement:

Jamie Cushion
Jamie Cushion

Pattern: Jamie Cushion by Moira Douglas
Size: Floor Cushion
Cast on: August 23, 2022
Yarn: Berroco Lanas in Snow Day, Grapefruit, Teal, Black, and Sunny
Hook:  Knitter’s Pride Dreamz in H (5mm)
Project Type:  Beyond the Comfort Zone
New Skill: Overlay Crochet

I fixed my wrist and forearm problems!  I have never heard of these crochet tools, but this stretching video helped a lot!  And now I cannot wait to start the outside border for the cushion :)  I have added the section separator, but it took several tries to straighten out those side lines.  Excited to see the border materialize!

Hipster Cowl
Hipster Cowl

Pattern: Hipster Cowl by Joji Locatelli
Size: One Size
Cast on: September 2, 2022
Yarn: Malabrigo Rios in Ilusion
Needles: Chiagoo Metals in US 8 (5mm) - 40”
Project Type:  Just Because

This is turning out to be so squishy!  Really, is there a better yarn than Rios?  I am enjoying the simplicity of the criss crosses, but I apparently am having trouble keeping track of my garter stitch rows.  I have completed two full repeats and the crosses and chevron texture are facing opposite directions.  It bothered me for about 20 seconds, and then I decided to YOLO it and just let the direction come as it may.  It really doesn’t matter anyway.  Once the tassels go in it, that’s gonna be the focal point most likely 🥰

Snowy Forest
Snowy Forest

Pattern: Snowy Forest by Midori Hirose
Size: M1 (to get to a L with my gauge)
Cast on: September 9, 2022
Yarn: Plymouth Yarn Homestead Tweed in Charcoal
Needles: Chiagoo Metals in US 8 (5mm) - 16”; Inox Metals in US 10.5 (6.5mm) - 24”
Project Type: Beyond the Comfort Zone
New Skill: Big Cables (I usually prefer smaller cables)

I absolutely love the way this yarn and pattern are merging together.  It’s the coziest fabric I’ve knit in a long time and I cannot wait to slip this on in the dead of a Wisconsin winter!  It’ll be interesting to see how I feel about the aran weight plus the cables.  My sweet spot is a fingering weight sweater so this is really a stretch for me :)

Helix Crop Top
Helix Crop Top

Pattern: Helix Crop Top by Iris H
Size: C / D
Cast on: August 1, 2022
Yarn: Ella Rae Lace Merino in Sweet Pear
Needles: Chiagoo Metals in US 2.5 (3mm) - 24”; Chiagoo Metals in US 4 (3.5mm) - 24”
Project Type: Wardrobe Brick

Well, I am fairly certain the back isn’t narrow enough.  But, since this is a base layer, I am going to push on and see if a looser cast-off on the back will prevent some of the puckering I am seeing and well placed straps will hold the front cups in the right place.  I also decided to swap the prescribed i-cord strap for the double knit i-cord from the Ripple Bralette.  🙏

Winter Lights
Winter Lights

Pattern:  Winter Lights by Stephen West
Size: One Size
Cast on: July 31, 2022
Yarn: Evergreen Fiber Works Cedar Sock in Ash, Fossil, and Pollinate; Malabrigo Silkpaca in Sunset
Needles: Chiagoo Metal US 5 (4mm) - 40” length
Project Type: Just Because

Oof. Each row is now about ~670 stitches.  Needless to say that it is taking just a wee bit of time to finish each one.  I have 18 more rows to knit and the cord bindoff, so I really need to get a move on if I want to enter this is the Across the Pond Shawl as an FO!  This will be my priority this week.  I may even go to both knit nights just to remove the distraction of finding things to procrastinate on at home… LOL

Leaf Top

Pattern:  Leaf Top by Melanie Reinert
Size: Custom
Cast on: July 24, 2022
Yarn: Cascade Llamerino in 19
Needles: Chiagoo Metal US 4 (3.5mm) - 24” length
Project Type: Just Because

Blocked all the pieces thoroughly.  I even broke out my second set of T-pins and a ruler!  Haven’t seamed a garment in ages…  Hoping that I can seam this in a good way.🪡

That’s Dreamy

Ahem, these are the same because I snuck in the Snowy Forest instead of the Koyamae…

Beyond the Comfort ZoneA focus on techniques I want to learn or styles that I don’t normally wear.

Joyous Things

I will make a separate post about all the fiber / fabric goodness, but two things that are bringing me joy lately that I would highly recommend:

The Woman King

A poweful, uplifting film about black female strength and the fight against slavery in 1820s Dahomey.  Viola Davis predictably amazing as General Nanisca, but the rest of the cast is also outstanding, with John Boyega so out of character (in a good way) that I didn't even realize it was him until the end of the film!  I really enjoyed it.

House of the Dragon

Milly Alcock has been a fabulous Rhaenyra, but she certainly hasn't been making a good case for herself as heir to the throne.  I'm loving the political intrigue in this series and what I will dub "The Green Wedding". It's got all the excitement of the original series with more thoughtful inclusion of female oppression and unexpected twists that only enhance the brilliant writing.  Can't wait to see how the season turns out!
